Established in 1887, the Piedmont Driving Club has endured as one of Atlanta's oldest and most prestigious private clubs. Over the past century, the amenities offered by the club have evolved with the changing desires of its membership. As golf became more important, a committee was formed to explore options for providing golf for the club. Since the historic, in-town location could not accommodate a golf course, an additional large tract of land was purchased.
The design for the Golf Clubhouse for the Piedmont Driving Club reflects the architectural language of the English Country House, blending rustic, Tudor and Gothic elements to achieve a "rambling" picturesque appearance.
Only twenty minutes away from the original club, the golf clubhouse will not replace the historic facility, but instead will be a complementary "retreat" for its golfing members. Located on 525 acres which includes a 147-acre lake, the site has been called "the best piece of property for golf in metro Atlanta."
The new clubhouse sits on the highest point on the property overlooking the lake. The main level includes: an entry gallery, mixed grill, lounge, full kitchen, and wrap around porch. A grand, circular staircase leads to the lower level which includes: the pro-shop, golf staging area, golf bag and cart storage along with other back-of-house facilities.
The exterior materials consist of stone, wood, and stucco with a slate roof. Although the new clubhouse is "modest" compared to the historic, intown facility, it reflects the quality and highest level of standards already established by the Piedmont Driving Club.
