Situated in a historic, residential district of Midtown Atlanta, the Ansley Golf Club has been a part of the community since the 1920s. In 1996, Surber Barber Choate & Hertlein Architects was originally asked to investigate the possibility of a renovation and expansion of the club. However, the condition of the structure, the site constraints, and the disproportionately high cost of renovation led to the decision to build a new facility.
One of the main goals of the design was to significantly increase the size of the facility while remaining sensitive to the scale and character of the residential surrounding neighborhood. The site was extremely limited and was bound by two streets and a flood plan. The building was constructed to retain its single level appearance from the street; however, two lower levels were incorporated into the design. By building downward, two main concerns were addresses - the facility keeps with the scale of the neighborhood while is adds a significant amount of functional space to the club.
The lowest level provides an exercise room, a pro shop, and support facilities. The middle level is devoted to casual member functions (informal dining, locker rooms, and porches). The upper, main public level provides spaces for formal dining, private dining, formal bar, and a ballroom.
