The complete renovation of this 90,000 square foot, Georgian style dormitory is the cornerstone in a plan to renovate or replace eleven residence halls on the campus of the University of Georgia. Reed Hall is a five-story building which was originally constructed in 1953 and designed to house 495 students. Before the renovation it was not air conditioned and there were no private bathrooms for students. Reed Hall simply did not live up to the standards of today's college student.
Early in the project, the design team surveyed students and built mock-up rooms in the basement level of Reed Hall to experiment with room sizes, furniture layouts and finishes. The information gathered from the students proved to be helpful in the design phase.
The dorm will have a variety of room configurations including: singles, doubles, super suites (three doubles with two baths and a common living area) single/single suites (two single rooms which share a private bath) and single/double suites (single and double room which share a bath).
The main floors of the dormitory contain a centralized laundry, mail room, staff offices, meeting rooms, waiting lounge and multipurpose programming space. New additions on the front and rear include glass walls to utilize the natural light and provide a view of the Reed Quad and courtyard area. The residence hall now houses 288 students.
