In November of 1993, Surber Barber Choate & Hertlein prepared a Master Plan for three buildings on the historic Greene County Courthouse Site: the 1840s Courthouse, the 1890s Jail, and the County Administration Building, which is a WPA school gymnasium structure. The purpose of the Master Plan was to determine whether a renovation would be possible. Through the Master Plan process, we determined that a renovation would not only be possible, but more beneficial in many ways compared to the construction of a new facility.
The project focused on the courthouse only and accommodates the expansion of the offices of the Probate Court and Clerk of the Superior Court, restoration of the Courtroom, a new District Attorney's Office and Grand Jury Room, and new offices for the Tax Assessors and Tax Commissioner, the Georgia Department of Corrections and County Administrators. The new addition is sensitive and compatible with the original, historic building. Other improvements include accommodating ADA requirements and replacing the electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems in the Courthouse.
