Rhodes Hall

Atlanta, Georgia

One of Atlanta's great Peachtree Street Mansions, Rhodes Memorial Hall was constructed between 1902 and 1904. In 1901, Mr. Amos Giles Rhodes began buying what became a 114-acre estate in then Suburban Brookwood, three miles north of Five Points. In 1929, Rhodes' son and daughter deeded the house to the State of Georgia, but restricted its use to historical. In 1979, the State commissioned an initial study of the building that outlined a plan for its preservation and preliminary recommendations for treatment. In 1984, the State leased Rhodes Hall to the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation which remains the tenant today.

Surber Barber Choate & Hertlein Architects was hired to prepare a Master Plan and Historic Structure Report for the building. Implementation of the Master Plan will be accomplished in several phases. The first phase completed in 2001, included stone cleaning, repointing, tile restoration, window restoration, roof repair, skylight reconstruction, painting, and structural rehabilitation. Construction documents have been completed for the current phase, including installation of new mechanical systems and air conditioning of the main floor and attic. Future phases include accessibility improvements and upgrades to the remaining mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
