Built in 1948 to serve the former Roosevelt High School, the gymnasium had been largely unused since the school's conversion to apartments. In 1994, Surber Barber Choate & Hertlein, who completed the renovation of the school, were selected to convert the gym into loft apartments.
The 42,000 square foot gymnasium now contains twenty-nine units on two levels. The project focused on retaining the character of the original gymnasium while creating efficient, contemporary living spaces. The concrete bleachers were incorporated into the layout of the units, as were the massive steel structural supports. Additionally, much of the original glazed "locker room" tile remains in place, and the gym floor, still bearing the markings of the basketball court, was left exposed.
