Canton Mill Lofts

Canton, Georgia

The Canton Mill, located north of Atlanta, has been a Canton landmark since it was built in 1924. At one time, the textile mill fabricated high-quality denim from raw cotton and was a major employer. During its peak, over 1,200 people were employed at the mill that consisted of four mill buildings and eight warehouse buildings. The mill was closed in the early 1980s. Then, after twenty years, the Canton Mill was given new life as an exciting loft apartment complex.

Careful attention to recreate the historic appearance was taken into consideration, so Surber Barber Choate & Hertlein Architects removed non-historic additions. A large portion of the roof where two mill buildings joined to create additional units and an interior courtyard showing the exposed steel framing of the original structure was also removed. All remaining units have heavy timber framing.

To help maintain the "mill look", interior spaces showcase the mill structure by exposing original elements such as columns and beams. Furthermore, from the use of historic photos, Surber Barber Choate & Hertlein Architects was able to recreate the historic window patterns that were once used. Where new construction (walls) were needed, corrugated metal sidings were built. The sidings also help to distinguish the new additions from the original structure while preserving the industrial feel of the mill.

The mill buildings contain dynamic one and two story units with a mix of one or two bedroom layouts. The total complex contains 315 apartments along with such amenities as a pool, workout facility, landscaped courtyard, outdoor recreation areas, overlook roof decks, and a museum-like three-story lobby highlighting the history of the mill, complete with artifacts. Some units even have outdoor patios or terraces. All parking is on-site and is secured by a gate/entry system.

The project is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and all work was performed in accordance with the National Secretary of Interior's Standards for Treatment of Historic Structures. Now with the renovation complete, the mill not only provides a unique living opportunity but also is once again a major highlight in this burgeoning community.
